      On Saturday, March 26, 2011, Deputy NaShawn M. Garland, a 16 year veteran of

 the Hempstead County Sheriff's Department, lost his battle with the disabling

disease - diabetes.

 

     Deputy Garland's service included tours of duty as a Patrol Deputy, Courthouse

Security, and Shift Supervisor at the Hempstead County Detention Center.

 

     Deputy Garland, always available day or night, whenever called upon to perform

anywhere needed, he served this department and the citizens of Hempstead County

with a zeal that cannot be matched by many.  He will be sorely missed by his

comrades at the Hempstead County Sheriff's Department and the citizens of

Hempstead County.

 

     NaShawn was survived by his father, 1 sister, 3 brothers, and 2 uncles.

William Madison Goff 1891-1926

End of Watch: Friday, November 5, 1926         Cause: Gunfire

 

Age: 35      Tour of Duty: 2 Years     Badge Number: (Not Available)

     On November 5, 1926, at about 7:30 p.m. Deputy Sheriff Goff and City Marshall

Baker conducted a search raid at a service station to search for large quantities

of liquor.

 

     Upon arrival the owner of the service station was seized and taken to a room to

be searched.  At this time he pulled out a gun and began shooting.  About a dozen

shots were fired between the suspect and the Deputies, ending with Deputy Goff

being struck below his right eye, which killed him instantly.

 

     The suspect was struck four times and was in serious condition, but further

information is unavailable.

 

     Deputy Sheriff Goff had been with the agency for two years, and previously served

several years as an employee of the Hope Police Department.

 

     Deputy Sheriff Goff was survived by his wife and a 4 year old son.
