I. Objective
A. To afford inmates the right and privilege of visits with family, friends, attorneys,
and others within the Hempstead County Detention Center.
B. To prevent the introduction of contraband, to intercept any illegal plans, ant to
maintain the safety and security of inmates, visitors, and Correctional Officers
during visiting.
II. Procedure
A. Visiting days for inmates will be according to the first letter of the inmate’s last
name.
1. A thru K – Tuesday and Saturday
2. L thru Z – Thursday and Sunday
B. Visits will be allowed between the hours of 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday
and Thursday and 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
C. All inmates may have two (2) visits each week up to 20 minutes in length and
they may have up to two (2) visitors (10 minutes each) during that visit. Minor
children may be allowed to visit as long as they are accompanied by an adult,
guardian, or legal counsel.
D. As visitors arrive, inmates will be moved from their cell to the visiting area on a
first come, first serve basis.
E. Attorneys, Bondsmen, Probation and Parole Officers, and other Professionals
associated with the Criminal Justice System or Social Service System may visit
their client when necessary. Every effort should be made by officers to
accommodate these persons during their visits.
1. On certain occasions, it may become necessary for an inmate to receive a
visit at times other than scheduled visiting. All such visits will be approved by
either the Sheriff or the Jail Administrator.
2. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department or City Police Department may
request unscheduled visits for inmates.
F. There will be no smoking by either the prisoner or visitor during the visit. Adults
will be responsible for their children. Any disruptive behavior by either party will
result in denial of or termination of the visit by the supervisor.
1. Supervisors will note any problems with the encounter.
2. If you have a problem which you feel demands immediate attention, notify
the shift supervisor.
3. Do not terminate a visit sooner than the allotted time.
4. If a situation develops in which you feel a visit should be prematurely
terminated, notify the shift supervisor, explain the circumstances, and carry
out whatever command decision is made.

III. Visitation Area Rules
A. Each person visiting must have, in their possession, valid identification. They may
be asked for identification at any time.
B. No one shall enter the visitation booth before the person they are visiting enters.
C. Only one visitor shall be in the booth to visit with an inmate. This will ensure the
area is not crowded and all inmates will be able to hear their visitor.
D. Each person is only to sign out one inmate, with the exception of parents with one
or more children incarcerated.
E. Anyone caught visiting more than one inmate will be asked to leave at that time.
F. Parents who cannot control their children will be asked to leave. This includes
vulgar language and excessive noise.
G. No revealing clothing should be worn during visitation.
H. The visitation lobby is not a public meeting facility. When your visit is completed
you are expected to leave at that time.
