The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office shall provide security for the Courthouse.
Courthouse Hours of Operation:
The Hempstead County Courthouse will be open from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday for all employees and the general public, with the exception of county observed holidays.
Staffing:
Security for the Hempstead County Courthouse will be provided by the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office.
The Chief Deputy assigns two Courthouse Security deputies who are classified as Specialized Police Personnel by the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training upon completion of a 120 hour auxiliary/reserve officer training course. The Courthouse Security Deputy position is a full-time position as approved by the Hempstead County Quorum Court, to provide security on the Courthouse grounds and inside the Courthouse.
Security will also be provided for certain activities occurring in the Courthouse after normal business hours. These include criminal trials, Quorum Court meetings, Early Voting, etc.
Methods of Screening:
Items prohibited from being allowed into the Courthouse are: firearms, knives (no matter what size), metal nail files, screwdrivers, scissors, hammers, razorblades, any form of pepper spray or tear gas or any other object that can be used as a weapon to cause serious physical injury or death to a person.
Note: Some items listed are used by legitimate repairmen. Courthouse deputies will determine whether or not a person will enter and if the person has a legitimate purpose to enter the Courthouse Building.
